Singita’s Pamushana Lodge opens after extensive refurbishment
04 November 2008
Singita’s Pamushana Lodge in the 130 000 acre Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve in South Eastern Zimbabwe, has opened after extensive refurbishment. Perched high against the sandstone hills, the exclusive Relais & Chateaux lodge is set amidst manicured lawns and affords breathtaking views across the bushveld peppered with magnificent Baobab trees and the Malilangwe dam below.
Often referred to as ‘one of Southern Africa’s best kept secrets’, Singita Pamushana lodge exudes an air of complete tranquillity and calm, offering excellent game viewing and unparalleled exclusivity and luxury in one of Africa’s most pristine wilderness locations.
The lodge design is elegant, contemporary, brave and embracingly bold to match the sheer majestic scale of the landscape. Singita Pamushana offers a total of six spacious suites with private pools, including a 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom suite - ideally suited to families traveling with children. In addition, a spectacular villa offers spacious indoor and outdoor living areas, a master suite and another four bedrooms, which may be booked for exclusive-use as a lodge-within-a-lodge by a party traveling together.
Nestling unobtrusively beneath the trees, the lodge incorporates the natural environment. The architecture is inspired by the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, using dry packed, hand-hewn intricate stone work depicting African symbols within the bold patterns. The grand architecture of curving walls are hand painted in primary colours and polished mud paint, inspired by African huts and the surrounding, large natural boulders. Serpentine thatch roofs connect all these elements that culminate aesthetically on the edge of the mountain side, celebrating the plentiful indoor and outdoor spaces with sweeping views across rock outcrops and long vistas of flat plains.
Made by master thatchers, the roofs that keep the lodge cool are made of elephant grass, and the sandstone boulders, sunbleached leadwood trunks and rock figs are integrated into the overall organic design. The natural architecture enhances views of the pools, the lush gardens and lake below, creating a sense of being outdoors, wherever you are.
Intertwining first-world comforts with the primordial rawness of a truly African environment, the lodge interiors reflect the signature Singita style, meticulously designed and uniquely interpreted by Singita’s interior designers Cécile & Boyd. Continuing the theme of embracing the local Zimbabwean culture, interior design features include colourfully printed geometric tribal fabrics worn by local women, and mosaic patterns inspired by bright African jewellery. Local pots, swords, head rests, shields, baskets, richly embroidered tapestries, and glass beads in colourful collections that sparkle and intrigue, further the sophisticated and bold tribal impact with Shangaan motifs and Shona symbols carved into furniture and lamps. These design elements, augmented by hand-worked bronze coloured metals, all coalesce to leave a deep, stirring impression on the soul.
Offering indoor and open-air dining rooms, three lounges and an impressively stocked wine cellar, lodge facilities furthermore include a bush spa and two communal heated swimming pools with a Jacuzzi.
A variety of guest activities are available such as game viewing safaris, bush walks, canoeing, tennis and tiger fishing, while at the lodge GM Jason Turner and his team offer warm and welcoming hospitality.
Malilangwe stretches across 400km² of geologically and botanically diverse habitats and is characterised by the semi-arid savannas, warm to hot climate, and low rainfall of Zimbabwe’s lowveld region. The remote wilderness is home to an astonishing variety of birds and abundance of wildlife - most notable rare and endangered species that include black rhino and wild dog. It is also home to 38 distinct plant communities, among which hundreds of majestic Baobab trees and the prolific Sycamore fig, as well as an astonishing variety of birds, which may be observed in the reserve.
Singita Pamushana is actively involved in the upliftment of local communities through various development initiatives spearheaded by the Malilangwe Trust, which currently feeds 25 000 school children daily. Guests’ contributions and any profits from commercial tourism operations are directly ploughed back into these initiatives to create a better life for local communities.
The Malilangwe Trust is also highly acclaimed for its conservation efforts, and in particular the ecological research, breeding and protection of endangered species. Some ten years ago, at great expense, the Trust funded the reintroduction of the black rhino to the area, which is now home to one of the highest concentrations of the species on the continent.
Singita Pamushana is reached with a convenient 2-hour flight direct from Johannesburg to the easily accessible Buffalo Range international airport, and from there it is only a few minutes’ drive to the lodge. Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve is so close in proximity to South Africa, that Singita offers a circuit trip for guests to explore the uniqueness of Singita Pamushana as a combination with a visit to some of its other award-winning lodges in the Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand.
