Being close to the equator, and with an altitude of approximately 1 400 metres (4 600 feet), the temperature at Singita Grumeti Reserves is relatively consistent: midday temperatures range from 26°C to 35°C (78°F to 95°F).
JUNE TO SEPTEMBER
The previous months long rains have ensured that the Serengeti plains contain substantial grazing and await the arrival of the half a million plus Wildebeest, Zebra and Thompson’s Gazelles amongst others. The game viewing in these months is superb and the opportunity to catch one of the greatest migrations on earth is quite spectacular. The mornings and evenings are generally quite cool and a jacket is definitely needed for the morning safaris.
OCTOBER TO DECEMBER
The short rains typically fall in these months. Temperatures will rise slightly after the cooler months and will stay in the mid 20’s for most days and begin to exceed 30 degrees toward the end of November. Resident wildlife on the concession has been exceptional over the last few years during these months, with large numbers of especially Thomson Gazelle, Topi and Zebra extremely prevalent on the plains.
JANUARY TO FEBRUARY
From the end of December to late January days are consistently warm accompanied by the odd late afternoon shower. The previous month’s rains have increased grazing quality on the plains and the great viewing of herbivores continues. Once again the days are long and warm and most evenings and drives will require nothing more than a long sleeved shirt.
MARCH TO MAY
The months of March through to May are traditionally when the long rains fall. Afternoon thundershowers are typical. These months are normally defined by warm mornings and hot days reaching the upper 20’s and lower 30’s with regularity. Afternoon drives may encounter heavy downpours followed by sunshine and glorious sunsets. This time of year offers some of the best cloudscapes at Singita Grumeti as there is nothing quite like an African thunderstorm on the Serengeti plains. Game viewing activities are generally confined to the morning during these months. The guides will therefore opt for longer morning drives with packed breakfasts and stay out in the field until midday.
Singita Grumeti Reserves forms part of the world-famous migratory route. The Great Migration traditionally moves through Grumeti Reserves between June and August. However, there is an abundance of wildlife year-round. The Serengeti, which is Africa’s No. 1 World Heritage Site, is also home to 25 species of carnivores, 40 herbivore species and over 600 bird species - including five that are endemic, and an impressively large number of raptors that form the highest concentration on the continent. This is also where you’ll find a wide range of primates, such as the rare Patas and Colobus monkeys, and prolific plant life.
